Joining the GCCWO

If you are interested in playing with the GCCWO, please register your interest using this enquiry form and we will get back to you within 24 hours.

The Gold Coast City Wind Orchestra does not hold auditions or limit the number of playing positions. Players thinking of joining are welcome to come along for a few rehearsals before deciding if the Orchestra is a good fit for their musical aspirations and ability. Prior to attending your first rehearsal, please email info@gccwo.com so we can ensure the section leader is expecting you.

New members are required to attend at least four rehearsals before joining a performance at the Director’s discretion.

Membership fees are currently $120 a year for Senior Members, and $70 a year for junior members. Members are also required to buy a GCCWO polo shirt; this is our uniform for casual performances. Our formal performance uniform is generic black.

Insurance (Our Constitution requires us to provide this information to members).

The GCCWO Insurance policy provides cover for members’ personal instruments at all times. We also have $20 million dollars of public liability insurance, but please note that we do not hold insurance cover for injuries sustained by GCCWO members while participating in GCCWO activities.

FAQs

What standard do I need to be to play with the GCCWO?

Generally our members have a playing ability equivalent to AMEB grade 4 or better. The only way to really know if you can play with us is to come along and try. One thing is for sure – playing with a group accelerates your capability far quicker than playing alone. Players not ready for the Wind Orchestra may be interested in joining our Development Band that rehearses at 4:30pm on Mondays.

Do you have an instrument I can use?

The orchestra owns some instruments available for hire to members who attend regularly. These include piccolo, clarinet, bass clarinet, soprano sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, tenor trombone, bass trombone, euphonium, French horn, tuba, flugel horn and trumpet. Hire is $20 per month, with a $150 deposit refundable upon return. We also have a keyboard, drum kit, timpanis and tuned percussion instruments at our rehearsal venue.

Do you need me (and the instrument I play?)

We don’t restrict the number of playing positions.

Do you have other ensembles?

From time to time groups of players from the Orchestra put together smaller ensembles.

Where do you perform / can you perform?

We often play for free at community events on the Gold Coast, and we welcome enquiries from interested venues. We also play at commercial venues in return for a donation. We usually put on a Gala Concert in April or October. In the week before Christmas we usually have 3 to 4 performances of Christmas music at Gold Coast venues.

To perform the Orchestra needs a space of about 12m x 8m. The location should be level, preferably under cover and sheltered. We can play outdoors subject to weather. We don’t need power to perform but we do need to get a vehicle relatively close to the performance area to unload our drum kit and percussion gear. The venue should also be free of other background noise or music, so our audience can hear us, and our players can hear each other.

The Orchestra is always looking for performance opportunities. If you have an idea for a performance opportunity, please contact info@gccwo.com
